I was actually more restrained this month when it came to buying books. I still acquired a sizeable stack but it was much better than other months when I had absolutely no self-control.
BOOK DEPOSITORY
- The Case of Beasts: Explore the Film Wizardry of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – Mark Salisbury
- The Smell of Other People’s Houses – Bonnie-Sue Hitchcock
- Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock – Matthew Quick
- The Nest – Kenneth Oppel
- One True Loves – Taylor Jenkins Reid
- Forever, Interrupted – Taylor Jenkins Reid
- Second Chance Summer – Morgan Matson
All of these were actually books that I ordered in November but didn’t receive until the first few days of December. I own paperback editions of The Smell of Other People’s Houses and Second Chance Summer but I loved them so much that I wanted the hardcover editions too. The rest are books that I’ve wanted to read for a really long time.
KINOKUNIYA
- New York: Through a Fashion Eye – Megan Hess
- A Monster Calls: Special Collector’s Edition – Patrick Ness
- The Gentleman Bastard Sequence (Gentleman Bastard #1-3) – Scott Lynch
- Freedom Swimmer – Wai Chim
I picked up Freedom Swimmer to read for the #DAReadathon so hopefully I can get to it soon. I couldn’t resist the cover and the rose gold foiling and rose gold painted pages on New York: Through a Fashion Eye so I snapped it up immediately. It was also signed by Megan Hess. On Boxing Day, Kinokuniya had a 20% off sale so I picked up the special hardcover edition of A Monster Calls and also the paperback boxset of The Gentleman Bastard Sequence, which I’ve wanted to read for a while.
DYMOCKS
- The Twelve Days of Dash and Lily (Dash and Lily #2) – Rachel Cohn & David Levithan
- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Original Screenplay – J.K. Rowling
I only picked up two books from Dymocks in December and I got them during the same shopping trip. I’d been lusting after the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them screenplay since it first came out. I was in North America at the time and didn’t want to lug it back home so I wanted until I was back to pick it up. I was also in the mood for a festive book so I bought The Twelve Days of Dash and Lily.
RECEIVED
- A Girl Called Owl – Amy Wilson
- Windwitch (The Witchlands #2) – Susan Dennard
- A Quiet Kind of Thunder – Sara Barnard
- Freeks – Amanda Hocking
- An Illustrated History of Notable Shadowhunters & Denizens of Downworld – Cassandra Clare & Cassandra Jean
I received a bunch of books from Pan Macmillan Australia in December. I’m part of the blog tours for A Quiet Kind of Thunder (January 8) and Freeks (February 5) so keep an eye out for my posts on those. I also requested Windwitch and they kindly sent me a copy. And I received A Girl Called Owl unsolicited. My coblogger Jeann @ Happy Indulgence sent me An Illustrated History of Notable Shadowhunters and Denizens of Downworld as a Christmas gift because she knew I really wanted it and omg the book is stunning!!
What exciting books did you pick up or receive during the holidays?
Soooooo many books! I got the Notable History of Shadowhunters and so on for Christmas as well 😊 the book is just so pretty!!!!
AND CASE OF BEASTS 😍 it’s amazing, right? But also super expensive, so I’ve been hesitant to get it myself. I also wanted Twelve Days of Dash and Lily but I haven’t found a cover that fits my edition yet … it bugs me ….

Yeah I did a lot of hunting around for sales before I finally committed to buying The Case of Beasts. It’s so worth it though because it’s amazing on the inside!! I can’t wait to really sit down and read through it. Omg I loved the illustrated Shadowhunters book so much! The illustrations were STUNNING and I loved the facts about each of the characters too. It’s making me really want to reread some of the books now! Ahhh yeah I have mismatched editions of Dash and Lily as well. It’s such a shame!

I hate it when they simply don’t make fitting editions available. It’s like a punch to the gut.

I’m a big fan of the Gentleman Bastard series 🙂 Hardly anyone gifts me books anymore, but I did receive a rather gorgeous/hilarious Sherlock manga!

Ooooh I’m gonna look into that Sherlock manga because I love Sherlock! I’ve heard a lot of great things about the Gentleman Bastard Sequence so I’m really excited to try it out. I love heist stories so I’m pretty sure I’m going to fall in love with the story and the characters.

That Fantastic Beasts book is absolutely gorgeous. I’ve seen it around and just stare at it with *heart eyes* And I absolutely adore A Monster Calls. I think I read it for the first time in 2015, and I have definitely loaned my copy out to so many people, especially with the movie coming out!

Yessss, I had to get that Case of Beasts book because it’s just absolutely stunning (and also perfect for bookstagram haha). I’ve yet to read it but I’m keen to learn more about the characters, the world and the making of the movie! I am so excited for the adaptation of A Monster Calls. Everyone who has seen it so far has loved it. I’m just really sad that the film doesn’t come out in Australia until March T_T. At least I have the beautiful special edition of the book though 😀

I was planning on reading The Twelve Days of Dash and Lily in the lead up to Christmas but completely forgot about it. Was it any good?
You should be happy to hear that I finally have a copy of Second Chance Summer in my hands and I can’t wait to read it. 😀

The Twelve Days of Dash and Lily was pretty good! If you liked Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares, I think you’ll like this one too. I liked both of them equally. This one probably has a little less adventure than the first one but still a really festive book.
YESSS, I’m so happy that you have Second Chance Summer! I hope you LOVE it!

I love it too! It’s the hardcover special edition and it’s stunning! It’s totally making me want to reread the book (which I probably will before I see the movie).
