Wrap Up: November 2015

November15wrapup

Welcome to another monthly reading wrap up. I had a really great reading month and I read a lot of high quality books. I have so many new favourites! A lot of the books that I read this month were really chunky too (e.g. Winter, Carry On, Chaos Walking). I read a total of 6739 pages!

The books appear in the order that I read them and my reviews are linked. I am a co-blogger at Happy Indulgence and I also post reviews there.

1. Siege and Storm – Leigh Bardugo  4 stars

The second book in the Grisha Trilogy. It was a step-up from Shadow and Bone but it lacked action and plot. While enjoyable, it was a filler book and we didn’t really learn anything new.

2. Ruin and Rising – Leigh Bardugo  45 stars

The final book in the Grisha trilogy, Ruin and Rising was by far the best book in the trilogy. It had more action and the pace of the book was more consistent. Also, the epilogue was amazing!

3. The Intern – Gabrielle Tozer  25 stars

An Australian YA novel about a shy and awkward girl who gets an internship at a popular fashion magazine. It was much too cliched and full of contemporary YA tropes for me to enjoy.

4. Faking It – Gabrielle Tozer  25 stars

The sequel/companion to The Intern. I felt exactly the same way about it as I did about The Intern. It was a novel that made me feel like I was too old for YA…

5. Carry On – Rainbow Rowell  5 stars

An amazing, amazing fantasy novel. It is Rainbow Rowell’s take on the Simon Snow series that was introduced in Fangirl. The characters, magic system and world were all phenomenal!

6. Love and Other Perishable Items – Laura Buzo  4 stars

Another Australian YA novel. This book is set in Sydney, Australia and explores self-discovery, growing up and first love. It is very realistic and relatable and I loved it!

7. Winter – Marissa Meyer  5 stars

The fourth and final book in the Lunar Chronicles series, which is my favourite series of all time. It was an epic, action-packed conclusion and I’m so sad that the series is over. I could read 10 more books set in this world, about these characters.

8. Six of Crows – Leigh Bardugo  5 stars

A new fantasy duology set in the Grishaverse. This is an epic and intense heist story that features a cast of complex and interesting characters! I absolutely loved all of the characters and the setting and world building in the book was amazing.

9. Denton Little’s Deathdate – Lance Rubin  4 stars

This is a contemporary novel with some sci-fi elements. This book is set in the near future, in a world where everybody knows their deathdate. The book takes place over 48 hours, starting on the day before Denton Little is scheduled to die.

10. What We Saw – Aaron Hartzler  45 stars

A deep and thought-provoking story about doing the right thing. I have written a review of this that will be going live on Wednesday.

11. Night Owls – Jenn Bennett  4 stars

A cute and sweet contemporary romance featuring two artists that fall in love through their art. It involves a realistic and honest relationship.

12. A Step Towards Falling – Cammie McGovern  35 stars

This book features characters that have developmental/learning disabilities. It also explores the idea of doing the right thing and not judging people by their appearances.

13. The Knife of Never Letting Go – Patrick Ness  45 stars

The first book in the Chaos Walking trilogy, this book is fast-paced, unique and terrifying. It has some very realistic but strong individuals and the relationships and character interactions in this book will give you all the feels.

14. The Ask and the Answer – Patrick Ness  45 stars

Book 2 in the Chaos Walking trilogy. It was a fantastic sequel, full of action and politics.

15. Monsters of Men – Patrick Ness  5 stars

This is the final book in the Chaos Walking Trilogy and it was an amazing conclusion! For me, this was the best book of the trilogy, and if you haven’t read Chaos Walking yet, I highly recommend it! A review of Monsters of Men will be up on Sunday.

16. The Weight of Water – Sarah Crossan  45 stars

A novel that’s written in free-verse and extremely quick to read! This is an emotional coming-of-age story about a 12 year old Polish girl who moves to London with her mother in search for her father who has left them.

BTCYA (HARPERCOLLINS YA EVENT)

HarperCollins Australia held a YA event in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney in November and I went to the Sydney event on November 20th. We looked at upcoming 2016 HarperCollins YA releases and also took home a VERY generous goodie bag! I have done a full event recap over at Happy Indulgence (along with Jeann, who went to the Brisbane event), with photos and all that good stuff.

SARAH J. MAAS AT KINOKUNIYA, SYDNEY

SJM

I went to the Sarah J. Maas event in Sydney last week on the 25th and got to meet her and have some of my books signed. It was an AMAZING day and she was so funny, bubbly and nice! I was also lucky enough to snag a front row seat!

Sadly, there was a 3-book signing limit and only one of them could be personalised so I got my copies of Throne of Glass, Queen of Shadows and A Court of Thorns and Roses signed. Initially, it was a 5-book limit, but they had to change it to 3 in order to keep it consistent across all of her Aus/NZ events 😦

SignedToG

We weren’t allowed to film or take posed photos with her (they threatened to kick us out if we did – there were a billion other rules too) but I did manage to get a candid shot with her. When she was signing my books I asked her if there’s a character she’s ever regretted killing off (e.g. my beloved Sam). Her answer was no, because the character deaths had to happen in order for the story to progress. But she did say that when she was writing Queen of Shadows, she wished Sam was still alive and that she misses him.

Wow, what a great month! Great job Jenna :). I’m on Winter right now and am about 55% done (according to goodreads). Hoping to start the Grisha Trilogy next month! So cool that you got to go to that Harper Collins event, it looked really fun on Twitter & Instagram!! And SUPER AWESOME that you met SJMaas! She’s becoming one of my favorite authors 🙂

I hope you enjoy the rest of Winter, Jess! The book just gets better and better! Also YAY to the Grisha trilogy. I liked Six of Crows a lot more but I also enjoyed the Grisha trilogy… for the most part. Both of the events I went to was so much fun! It was really generous of HarperCollins to give us so many goodies. I LOVED meeting Sarah J. Maas. She was everything I imagined her to be and more!

I am so happy with myself this month! Even though it made me a little bit less organised with blogging, I’m super duper pleased with how much I read and what I read too. I have some exciting books planned for December. Cannot wait till the Christmas break when I can just binge read everything.

UGHH, I’m actually jealous of how much you read this month. This is a fabulous wrap-up, and you read some pretty chunky books. I’m SO glad you liked the Chaos Walking trilogy. It’s always a pleasure to see people read books you love! I’m reading Winter right now, and I’m loving it! x

Such a great wrap up! So many books and I AM SO JEALOUS YOU WENT TO SEE SARAH J MAAS. 😍 This month has been flipping fantastic for you! I must get into the last two books in the Chaos Walking trilogy soon, because after reading the first one, I don’t think I can wait any longer to see what happens next!

Thanks Josie! I’m so happy that I got to see Sarah J. Maas too!! I wish I could’ve had all my books signed. I know that some people lined up twice but at my event in Sydney, we were told that we’d be kicked out if we lined up twice or got other people to get our books signed. 😥 Omg you have to finish Chaos Walking! Monsters of Men is soooo intense and epic! I have no idea how you managed to stop at that stupid cliffhanger at the end of The Knife of Never Letting Go!

I WANT TO KNOW THE ANSWER TO THAT TOO!! I was so disappointed. There weren’t that many people at the event either. Probably only about 100. I think there definitely could’ve been time for a quick photo. I tried to wait around until after the signing was over but the events staff at the bookstore and Sarah’s team whisked her away really quickly. The sad thing was that there were two more sessions the day after I went and some people managed to get posed photos with her 😦

Yeah I’m happy that I got to speak to her! There was also a moment where she stood RIGHT NEXT TO ME. LIKE SO CLOSE OUR ARM HAIRS PROBABLY TOUCHED. I was sitting in the front row so I was one of the first people to get my book signed. But they needed to move our chairs out of the way to put in a table for her. So we ended up standing next to each other during the confusion!! And OMG IT WAS AMAZING. I wanted to ask for a photo with her then but I didn’t want to be kicked out before my books were signed….

Amazing reading month for you! You read so much! I am totally jealous about that! So many amazing sounding books in your wrap up too and so many that I still need to read. I wish there was more time in a day and reading slumps were NEVER a thing. I just got Six of Crows the other day, so I really need to get Ruin & Rising finished, so I can start Six of Crows! I’m pretty excited about them both. I’ve had Denton Little’s Deathdate for awhile now, but haven’t gotten around to read it yet. So many books and I swear not enough time to read them all! haha. 😀

Oooh YES! Six of Crows! I really liked Ruin and Rising so hopefully you’ll enjoy it and fly through it too so that you can get to Six of Crows!! Denton Little was a lot of fun and it was a really fast-paced read too. I’d tell you to read it but you have enough on your plate XD

I am so impressed by how fast you read! It sounds like you had a really great month full of wonderful events. I hope December lives up to to November!
I don’t understand why you couldn’t take a picture at a signing! That is so silly! Brandon Sanderson lets you take lots of pictures and even record audio or video of the signing. I guess all authors are different though…

I think her team and the events people at the bookstore were just really strict about wanting to keep the experience consistent for fans at all of her tour stops. Which is fair, but I didn’t really like the organisation of the event and how we were treated by the bookstore events staff. The lady just talked down to us and started listing off rules right from the start, threatening to have us escorted out if we didn’t follow them. I know that it’s a YA event, but we know how to behave properly… That was the one blemish to what was a wonderful time (and it’s not Sarah J. Maas or her team’s fault. It was just the bookstore staff being kinda rude).

You read so much! I am impressed by you.

I read the first Chaos Walking book forever ago and was a little too traumatised to continue. I want to know what happens next but…. omg. That book kind of haunts me, you know?

I was at an event that Patrick Ness did in the summer, and in the Q&A a guy raised his hand and asked whether hi had any more plans to kill off beloved animals. Patrick Ness just went: “I have no regrets.”

    He might be a monster.

I can see why you’re still traumatised by The Knife of Never Letting Go. It was brutal!! The rest of the trilogy is just as brutal but I loved it and was hooked. And haha that sounds exactly like something Patrick Ness would say. He just makes you love all of the characters and then kills them off with great pleasure. I think he’s coming to Australia in August/September (fingers crossed he comes to Sydney) so I’m really excited to meet him and hear all that he has to say in person 😀

Carry On is on my TBR anyways. It looks like you had lots of great reads! Anyways, where do you make your new headers? They are gorgeous <3.

YOU ARE SO DARN LUCKY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU GOT TO MEET SARAH J. MAAS!!!! Next time you go to meet a big time author I just may have to kill you and take your spot 😛 😛 I am so jealous!!! I am glad you enjoyed it, it must have been super fun!

THOSE WERE MY EXACT FEELS AFTER READING WINTER. I NEEEEEEDDD MOOORRREEEE. I’m so glad that we’re getting the short story collection in just 2 short months! But what I really want is another 10 books about these characters and set in this world. I NEEEEED. I’m super excited for her next book though. I love Alice in Wonderland retellings and it sounds like it’s going to be a great one.

And thanks for the compliment! I used and was inspired by stock textures that I found on deviantart! I’m trying to keep it consistent across my whole blog 🙂

Hehe, you’d have to fight me Celaena-style because I’m not giving up my seat! And I give myself the ability to shapeshift into Rowan so that you won’t dare to hurt me!

      • vbooksunveiled says:

Oh, no. NOOOO. Rowan=mine AKA not you. 😛 Celaena style is overrated. I’m just going to show you some fist! That seat is mine, I tell you. MINE. MIIIIINE.

I know, I’m so excited for Stars Above to come out. And the Alice in Wonderland retelling will have to be better than the Lunar Chronicles to make up for them ending. I need more than 10 books, Jenna. I will read Marissa Meyer for the rest of my life if I can.

I will check deviantart out! It sounds really cool! And you are doing a great job of keeping it consistent, it’s really cute and looks nice with your color scheme.

AHH. SO MANY GREAT BOOKS. I adore Leigh Bardugo’s books (especially Six of Crows) so I am glad to see you liked them too. 🙂 And Winter was such a great and satisfying end to the Lunar Chronicles series, wasn’t it? ❤ Also…that's so cool you were able to meet Sarah J Maas! Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous recap! Here's to a great December! ❤

Ugh I hope December will be just as good. I feel like nothing will be able to top November though. But it is Christmas so I guess December wins after all! Omg Winter was AMAZING! Definitely my favourite book of the month. I could read that beast of a book over and over again.

OH oh! I need to finish the Chaos Walking series I own them all and I LOVEd the first one. I’m just a slacker. Also I’m the same rating as you on Denton’s. 😛 And I’ve got Winter in my clammy little paws and I can’t wait to start it. SQUEEEE.
Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!

IT WAS BEYOND TRAGIC. SAM’S DEATH WAS JUST PROFANE AND RUDE AND OMG I CAN’T. IT’S NOT TOO LATE, SARAH. YOU CAN STILL BRING HIM BACK. And I’d forgive all of the inconsistencies too T_T
Chaos Walking was just amazing. The other two books definitely don’t disappoint and the third one is so epic and explosive (literally) that my mind was just BLOWN (not literally). There’s a new animal friend in The Ask and the Answer if that helps soothe your Manchee wounds. But before that, READ WINTER!

I JUST ADORE THE PHOTOS IN THIS POST SO MUCH. ❤ And that is so cool you got to meet Sarah J. Maas. I think I've already said this before; but I know I'm going to be super envious of you when I actually read her books. (I'm sure I'll fall in love with them-but I'll keep my expectations low just in case.) And gah, I feel kind of ashamed to admit I read only one book in November. Sigh. It's okay though. By the end of this week I'll be on break and I'll be able to read lots! 😀 Anyhow, awesome reading month, Jenna!

She was so lovely to meet! And I love that she properly took the time to answer my question even though her whole team and the bookshop event organisers were trying to push me away haha. She was so nice and I hope you read her books and get to meet her one day! Hehe, what are you planning to read on your break?

I never make monthly TBRs but I actually created one for this month and January. It’s mostly going to be ARCs that were released in October, November, and this month. I’m hoping to squeeze in Six of Crows and maybe even Bookishly Ever After though. 🙂 As for A Little Life… I gave my copy away to a friend so I’m going to have to order it this week again. I want to finish ALL for my birthday, which is in January. ^.^
