Dim Sum Book Tag

dim-sum-book-tag-2

The Dim Sum Book Tag is the brainchild of Joey @ Thoughts and Afterthoughts and Jenna @ Reading With Jenna (mostly Joey and a little bit me). Dim sum is a style of Chinese cuisine whereby food is served in small (tapas-like) portions and is common during yum cha (which literally means: drinking tea). This tag is inspired by good company and good eats.

RULES:

Here are some rules to devour this tag:

  1. Thank the blogger who nominated you, linking back to their site
  2. Devour dim sum and answer the tag questions
  3. Tag five others to join your round table for some dim sum fun
  4. Food coma

If you link back to either this post or Joey’s post, we’ll add you to a list of people who have completed the tag!

DIM SUM BOOK TAG QUESTIONS

TEA: A BOOK THAT STARTED OFF HOT BUT TURNED COLD QUICKLY

the-selectionWhen I first started The Selection by Kiera Cass, I was pretty intrigued by the world and the caste system. I don’t usually read dystopian trilogies, but it seemed like a fun one to try out. Sadly it went cold after the first quarter of the book. I was not interested in the love triangle at all, and America Singer is the most frustrating character to read about. But the bad plot and bad writing was so addictive that I read all the other books and even picked up The Heir…

CHIU CHOW DUMPLING: A BOOK THAT FEATURES ELEMENTS OF LAND AND SEA

six-of-crowsYep, the answer to this one has to be Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. I just finished reading this one yesterday and I LOVED it (a review has been written and will go live on Monday!).

This book takes place partly on land and partly at sea. In order to carry out a heist, our main characters need to travel from one place to another by boat. Water and swimming is just a massive part of this book!

RICE NOODLE ROLL: A FAVOURITE MULTI-LAYERED CHARACTER OF YOURS (EG. TRAITS? SKILLS? MORALLY AMBIGUOUS?)

fairestQueen Levana from The Lunar Chronicles is probably my favourite villain. There’s so much more to her than meets the eye and I love that Marissa Meyer wrote a whole prequel dedicated to Levana’s story. Her character has so much depth and is so interesting to read about! She’s definitely done some terrible things but her past is so devastating. She’s the unloved child who was bullied by her older sister and I guess she just wants all her people to love and adore her, even though she goes about it the wrong way.

SHRIMP DUMPLING: A BOOK WITH A TRANSPARENT BLURB THAT GIVES THE STORY AWAY

starry-night I have already given this book away because I disliked it that much. Starry Night by Isabel Gillies is about a girl who falls in love with a boy at some fancy event and then he breaks her heart. That’s pretty much what the blurb of the book says and that’s pretty much all the happens in this book. From memory, the back of the book says something about overcoming heartbreak and first love… so the whole ending was ruined because I knew he was going to be a dick and break up with her.

STEAMED BBQ PORK BUNS: A BOOK THAT IS FLUFFY ON THE OUTSIDE BUT PACKS A PUNCH OF FLAVOUR (EG. MESSAGE? DEPTH? CONTROVERSY?)

My-Life-Next-DoorIf you judge My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick by its cover and synopsis, it seems like a fluffy contemporary romance. And it is. But it’s also so much more!

My Life Next Door explores family dynamics so well. It examines the differences between different kinds of families, as well as the stereotypes that people may hold towards large, rowdy families. And it also has a great message about doing the right thing. I love this book!

CHICKEN FEET: A BOOK WITH DIVIDED OPINIONS

me-and-earl-and-the-dying-girlMe and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews.

I really did not like this book. It was a 1 star read for me, but I also know lots of lots of people who do like this novel. I personally didn’t connect with any of the characters or the humour so I found the book to be utterly boring. But I know lots of readers who found this book to be hilarious, so I guess it’s a matter of whether the humour suits you or not?

LOTUS-WRAPPED STICKY RICE: A BOOK YOU’VE RECEIVED/GIVEN THAT WAS NICELY PACKAGED

harry-potter-illustrated-edition-coverI rarely receive books from anybody. I usually buy all my books and when I do get presents, it’s usually a gift card to buy books. When I give people books as gifts, I usually just wrap it in gift wrap so it’s nothing special…

I thought I’d just feature the illustrated Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The jacket for this edition is absolutely beautiful and it has a built in bookmark!

EGG CUSTARD TART: A BOOK THAT USES SIMPLE INGREDIENTS AND CLICHES BUT EXECUTES IT PERFECTLY

carry-onI wouldn’t say that Carry On by Rainbow Rowell is full of cliches… but it does have lots of fantasy elements that I’ve seen before. Obviously, it has lots of parallels to Harry Potter, since it started off as a little bit of a parody of HP in Fangirl. But I thought Rainbow Rowell did such a fantastic job of creating an original story, even though it is simple and a little bit tropey. It’s one of my favourites of the year and I cannot stop raving about it. There’s also a discussion between me, Jeann and Aila over at Happy Indulgence

MANGO PUDDING WITH EVAPORATED MILK: ANY BOOK RECOMMENDATION + BEVERAGE/SNACK THAT’S A WINNING COMBINATION

simonvsSimon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli.

Oreos

Need I say more?

I really need to reread this book again, but this time have lots of mini oreos on hand!

FRIED SESAME BALLS: A BOOK COVER WITH EMBOSSED TEXT/DESIGN YOU JUST LOVE TO RUN YOUR FINGERS OVER

my-heart-and-other-black-holesThe cover of My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga is amazing to touch! The cover is stitched and you can actually feel the bumps on the hardcover edition (I’m not sure what the paperback feels like).

When I first saw the cover I thought it was so weird that the text was off centre, but then I realised that they probably wanted to preserve all of the amazing stitching!

DIM SUM STEAM CART: THE TYPE OF CARRYING BAG YOU USE TO BRING BOOKS AROUND

book-bagsI usually use a tote bag as my every day bag and that’s what I carry my books in, I guess. I have a ridiculously large collection of totes… I think I have about 30 – 40. I switch totes almost every day but the one I’m using right now its a Babar: Yoga for Elephants tote.

I also use a mini book bag so that whatever I’m reading doesn’t get damaged in my tote. I’ve had so many terrible experiences with my keys scratching my books or denting the pages. I have no idea where I got this cat bag from… but it fits most books, including tall hardcovers. The only ones that don’t fit are tall and fat hardcovers. I use an Apple drawstring bag for those.

I INVITE TO YUM CHA:

(Tagging more than 5 because… I want to have dim sum fun with all of you!!)

Oh I kind of liked the Heir a little bit more… probably because there’s no annoying love triangle (it’s more like a love decagon right now though). Eadlyn is more bratty but she’s much less frustrating than America, in my opinion. I have no idea why they’re so addictive when they’re such terrible books!

Haha my parents usually just give me money to buy whatever I want 🙂 And my non-reader friends give me gift vouchers because they don’t know what I have or haven’t read. I did get an adult colouring book this year for my birthday but still haven’t started it yet XD

This book tag is making me hungry Jenna! It looks like we have so many similar opinions in books, Queen Levana was definitely a complicated villain and I’ve been hesitant about The Selection series as well. And of course, you know how I feel about Simon vs and Carry On! Great tag lovely!

You’ll see a lot more Levana in Winter 🙂 She’s such an interesting character because I can’t figure out whether she’s truly evil and wants Earth and Luna domination or if she just wants the whole universe to love her. Ugh The Selection… I wish I didn’t waste my time with it. But it’s like a really fast, addictive, IQ-dumbing read.

And hehe, my two Simons ❤

Eeep I still haven’t read My Life Next Door yet, I will, soon! Before my birthday, thank you again for sending it to me.

Omg once, I had my beautiful hardcover Clockwork Princess in my small book bag, but my keys still managed to leave little dents in the bottom of the pages 😥 I was devastated. Still am tbh. Hehe omg I am still in love with My Life Next Door. When I was flipping through it yesterday and picking out quotes for next week’s Top Ten Tuesday, I was reminded of how much I love the writing and the characters. You’ll love Jase and his little brother, George! ❤

I was actually stuck on one or two of the questions. They were so hard! Joey is terrifying…

This looks so fun. I’d love to go to dimsum with you too and order everything in this tag + more, because dim sum. ❤

It's so amazing that you have 30-40 totes! That's quite a lot. I have 0 and I've been wanting to get one–do you buy them from anywhere in particular? I'm kind of picky with my bags but a tote just sounds wonderful. 🙂

I get them from bookstores if I see ones that I like. I’ve become a bit more picky with them now. There are some that I bought early on that I can’t really carry comfortably on my shoulder (eg. straps are too short so it’s hard to get things in and out). I like the Penguin classics ones that come in different colours (Dymocks sells them). They have the magnetic closure and they’re really sturdy. But the ones I’ve been liking recently are the RedBubble tote bags. They have super long straps and the huge range of nerdy/fandom designs is amazing! (Except, you have to be careful when choosing the design because all the totes have black straps and they don’t always look so cute when you have a non-black background)

Oooh so this is how you coin these foods in the west/Australia. So interesting! I’m Asian and we have an entirely different take on it e.g. Shrimp Dumpling is Hakao, Steamed Pork Bun is Siopao, etc. I love love love dimsum! Gaaah this tag is impossible to finish without feeling absolutely hungry!

And OMG! can’t and won’t stop fangirling with you on Carry On! Simon and Baz’s love thing still lingers on me I can’t even! Why is Rainbow Rowell so good with boys?? ❤

*clutches heart* SnowBaz! ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ OTP FOR LIFE! I could reread Carry On like 10 times in a row and not get sick of it.

Hehe, I didn't really know all of the names. Joey took care of that 🙂 But I love yumcha so, so much! It's such a fun experience each time!

WHY MUST THIS POST MAKE ME SO HUNGRY. As my Spanish teacher would say, now I’m hangry. (Hungry + angry I don’t have any of these foods on hand.) Thanks for the tag! The mango pudding and egg custard books are especially delicious. 😛

You should see my nail polish collection…….. I have like 150. Sometimes I look at the stuff I own and try to convert it into how much money I could have saved if I never bought those things. Like my nail polishes on average cost about $15-20… Could have saved $2000-3000 since I stopped painting my nails a while ago. And if I wasn’t a book nerd… I’d probably be like $10000+ richer.

Yeah I could just gobble up the mango pudding and egg tart books over and over. Why are all the Simons so wonderful?!!!

This tag you and Joey made is awesome! 🙂 he tagged me to do it, so I will definitely be doing it soon!

I was always back and forth on whether I wanted to read the Selection series. I finally decided to just listen to the audiobooks of the series while at work and if you thought reading America singer, imagine having a voice to go with it! She was SOO annoying and I really couldn’t stand her. I did enjoy the books though, just not her.

Hehe it was mostly Joey, with a few suggestions from me. The workload was extremely uneven but I’m not the food tag genius that he is XD .

Omg I cannot imagine having to listen to America’s whining through audiobook!!! UGH NO! I thought the books had so much potential. I might’ve even liked them if some things were different (ie. a more likable protagonist, no love triangle, more exploration of the social issues and rebelling since that was never properly resolved). It was a good concept that was poorly written.

Hahaha!! Speaking of taking 8 months to go through, this reminds me of our convo we had the other day about decluttering. Omg, I started the process this weekend. I sort of want to do a post about how that book has like totally changed my life including pics of the clutter we had before and talking about how much we got rid of and photos of the after, we’re still working on it too so we’re not done yet, but IDK if that’s something people would be interested in. Thoughts?

I think that would be a great post, if you couple it with a review of the book! I was initially a bit skeptical about the method since the introduction made it seem a little bit too good to be true. But once I started throwing away some stuff, I felt better about myself and I’m now spending a lot less money on things I don’t need!

I actually didn’t read the book, my husband did and translated for me. This happens a lot to us. He reads “self help” books and I take up the mantle like a possessed little dragon and light up the world with my ridiculous passion for the new project. I accidentally mislead people into believing that I actually read these books bc of how fully I promote them and how deeply I ingrain the “gold nuggets” my husband pulls from them. Lol, maybe I’ll just say that in the review and be open about that, lol! IDK.

Yep, that is exactly how that conversation went. Until we hauled all the clothes into the living room and I started to cry that I’d have NO CLOTHES. But I have just enough now and don’t regret a damn thing. I’m so much happier with only 1/10 of my wardrobe, I think some fashionista somewhere just screamed blasphemy that I’d utter such a phrase.

I actually can’t wait to get rid of most of my clothes! I have so many items that I’ve been keeping in case I want to wear it again in the future. But let’s face it, that’ll never happen. I just need to do it when my mum isn’t around to hoard everything.

Yes! Trying to get rid of stuff with parents around is no bueno. The first thing out in laws said when they saw how much we were getting rid of was “ugh, don’t you need your clothes?” We then showed them our closet and that is was still well stocked and I think they were still dubious. But Kevin and I share a walk in closet, he has his side and I have mine. They each have a walk in to themselves so I can understand the incredulous looks, lol.
I kept clothes from when I was very thin. They still sparked joy and they’re so beautiful to look at. Now when I walk in my closet, I see them and I feel happy and actually more motivated to lose weight. So overall the decluttering has been super healthy.

What a yummy photo. I’m starving after reading your post. Such a cute tag! I was waiting for the release of the last book in Lunar series, so I can binge read it. I have a soft spot for complex villains, so now I want to read this series even more. I totally agree with you about My Live Next Door. I loved this book.

Yes! I love My Life Next Door so much! Have you read her other books? I loved them as well. YAY, now that Winter is out, you can binge read the whole series! It’s my favourite series of all time (maybe tied with Harry Potter) and it’s just AMAZING! ❤

Even though I’m vegetarian and the veggie dim sum choices are limited, I’m touched that you tagged me for this brilliant collab tag you and Joey created, Jenna! Joey didn’t tag me so I should probably hold grudges against him-though I know it’s probably because he thinks I’m too behind on my tags not to mention my weird semi hiatus thing. Anyhow, I love the categories! And heh… I actually don’t like Oreos that much. It became one of my food aversions since I once had a pack of them and went to class with pirate’s teeth (aka the black bits made me look like I had missing/rotting teeth), which was super embarrassing as a middle schooler at the time. But I still love Simon all the same.
