Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Adaptations that I Still Haven’t Watched

ten-book-to-movie-adaptations

Here we are with another Top Ten Tuesday. This is a weekly meme hosted by the team over at The Broke and the Bookish. The theme for this week is book-to-movie adaptations so I’m featuring ten movies that I still haven’t watched.

1. The Hunger Games

When The Hunger Games movie first came out, I was going through an anti-dystopia phase so I pretty much resisted seeing this. I’ve been wanting to watch it lately because I’ve heard that all of the movies in the franchise have been really good, but I’m hoping to read the books first. (Translation: I won’t be watching the films any time soon).

2. If I Stay

This movie came out before I was even aware of Gayle Forman’s books. But I really enjoyed the duology so I want to watch this sometime before the Where She Went film comes out.

3. City of Bones

I haven’t watched the City of Bones movie and I probably never will. I’ve heard terrible things about it and I’d much rather watch the upcoming Shadowhunters TV show. I much prefer Dom Sherwood as Jace (I have doubts about the Clary they cast though).

4. Gone Girl

I’m not a fan of psychological thrillers. It takes me a really long time to get over them. But I’ve heard lots and lots of good things about this adaptation (and the book as well) so I might watch this one day. I need to build up my tolerance somehow right?

5. Paper Towns

I didn’t really enjoy the book – it was kind of just average for me. But I was really looking forward to the release of the movie adaptation because I wanted to see what Nat Wolff and Cara Delevingne could do with it. Sadly, I was kind of busy during the period when it was screening… and I wasn’t excited enough about it to really make an effort to go to the cinema

6. The Maze Runner

I haven’t read any of the books and I know nothing about the plot, but I’ve heard that The Maze Runner movie is really good? I don’t have a burning desire to check it out but I could probably be convinced.

7. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

I really did not like this book and I had no plans to watch the movie when it was out. But I’ve heard some pretty good things about the adaptation and I think it’s definitely a story that works better as a film than a book. I might give this one a go.

8. Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesia

This one is an old one. I haven’t read the book but I remember watching the first 30 minutes of the adaptation a couple of years ago. It had some of my favourite Japanese actors in it and I’m sad that I never finished it.

9. The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I put off watching this one when it came out because I wanted to read the book first. IΒ finally read the book earlier this year and absolutely loved it. It’s now one of my all-time favourite books. Hopefully I can get around to watching the movie soon too because I already know that I’m going to love it!

10. Divergent

This is another dystopian series that I don’t have much interest in. I managed to get the hardback of Divergent for a really, really good price so I might end up reading it someday. I still have no desire to watch the films though because I have only really seen negative reviews for it… Yeah I think I’ll stay away from this one.

If you’ve seen any of these, let me know what you think of them and which one I should watch first! Also, which upcoming releases are you excited for? I’m super duper excited about the Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children movie that’s coming out on Christmas 2016!

Glad to see a lot of familiar books here! πŸ™‚ I hope you can read Hunger Games and watch the movie because it was good. (The first book, I mean.) I first watched the movie and it made me read the book. The two book sequels are not as good as the first novel, though. (That’s the usual case with YA, eh?) So this thoughts are also applicable to Divergent. πŸ˜€

If I Stay is a good movie but I don’t like its too much cuddling parts, which if I remember correct, didn’t happen in the book.

I’ve watched Perks but haven’t read the book because I cannot relate (haha) and I have read Paper Towns but, like you, I don’t feel anything special. (But I think I will still watch the movie. πŸ™‚

Finally, please read and watch Gone Girl. It is a psycho thriller and it is a bit creepy but it was good. πŸ™‚ I hope you can ‘ready’ yourself soon! πŸ™‚

Sorry for my long comment! I am just glad to see familiar novels here! πŸ˜€

You should definately wath the maze Runner series. I watched the movie first and it encouraged me to read the whole series. And the second part just released and I’m planning to watch it soon.
Although the divergent hype was very high, I didn’t like the movie and not cared enough to read the books.
The hunger games was great to read. But it did not provide entertainment through movies. But still they are watchable.

I feel the same way about Divergent. I haven’t heard very good things about the books or the movies but I ended up buying the first book just because it was cheap. I’ll probably still read it just so that I can understand the references in the future but I’m not really looking forward to it. I don’t actually know what The Maze Runner series is about so maybe I can just go into the movies and appreciate them for what they are.

The maze runner series is about a group of children who are put in a maze and are required to get out. Who sent them there? What should they do? Everything is unknown. You can check my reviews on this trilogy. And I think they are awesome. I loved them. And the movie too. But as usual the movies didn’t show all the facts so the books always win!

Oh you so aren’t missing anything by not having watched Mortal Instruments. I’m super excited for the tv series as well!

I’ve never read the book but the Gone Girl movie is pretty damn good! I wasn’t really a fan of If I Stay or Paper Towns. I’m like one of the rare people who don’t like Gayle Forman or John Green. I just recently watched Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, it’s such a stranger movie but it’s really well done and clever.

I’m sensing a theme here: are you just not interested in dystopian movie trilogies? Haha! I love Hunger Games, Maze Runner and Divergent and would recommend them all, but if nothing else watch Hunger Games. I 100% believe it is a modern classic. Those movies get better and more intense each time.

    Great list πŸ™‚

Haha I’m just not a fan of the dystopian genre in general. But I think The Hunger Games is definitely a series that I will catch up on because I’ve heard amazing, amazing things about the films. Surprisingly I haven’t been spoiled for anything (or haven’t cared about it enough to be spoiled) so I can go into it with fresh eyes. I think I probably will end up watching Me and Earl and the Dying Girl at some point. I just really did not connect with the book and thought it was really boring, but I can see it being a charming movie.

I only watched the first movie of the hunger games. I read the whole series, but I do not like distopian. I just couldn’t push myself to watch the movies.

This week I watched the perks of being a wallflower, since I just read the book for the second time. (And I didn’t like it.) I actually thought the movie was so much better then the book.

I’ve actually watched Gone Girl when it came out in cinemas even though I haven’t read it (because my friend spoiled it and forced me to watch it with her), but I actually quite enjoyed it, even though I wasn’t sure what was going on half the time! I feel like it’s one of those movies I have to watch twice to understand what’s going on in the plot. I still haven’t read the book though. I don’t know if I should since I know the plot now.

And yeah, the City of Bones movie isn’t really worth watching tbh. I really did what they did with Hunger Games in terms of being a book-movie adaptation aha, and also the last movie is coming out really soon!

GONE GIRL IS AMAZING. I’ve raved about it to so many people! The book was wonderful, and the movie was also really greatβ€”I’m actually having trouble deciding who is the clear winner here.

And I prefer The Maze Runner’s movies to the books. I think I have a teeny crush on Ki Hong Lee, haha.

OKAY! I’ll probably just watch the Gone Girl film… since it’ll be quicker than reading the book and I’m not sure that I’ll be able to enjoy the book once I already know what happens. I probably won’t ever read The Maze Runner books… but I might give the movies a go one day.

I rather enjoyed Hunger games movies, they aren’t so bad, but the Divergent movies – I only kind of liked the first one, the second wasn’t that good.
I haven’t read Maze runner books yet, but I’ve seen the movie and it was just OK, nothing great though.
City of bones had totally wrong actors. The only one I liked was actor playing Bane – I totally love this guy.

Yeah I don’t think I’ll ever watch the Divergent movies. I’ll probably only read the first book because I own it but I don’t really have any interest in the series… plus I already know what happens at the end and it’s kind of not very motivating. When I saw the cast for City of Bones I was so disappointed. Jamie Bower Campbell is just not Jace!

DO NOT watch the City of Bones movie… it’s not good (-_-)’ at all.
Gone Girl was one of my favorite movies last year, it is so amazing, I’m not sure if i’ll come around to read the book, but the movie is a must see.
I honestly felt that The Maze Runner was a bit meh, both book and movie…
I liked Me & Earl & the dying Girl book, but the movie is SO MUCH better πŸ˜‰
The Perks of being a Wallflower you have to watch sometime, it’s an amazing movie, and the book is great, but in some aspects the movie works better.

I’m super excited to see The Perks of Being a Wallflower and the format of it. It’s one that I’ve wanted to see ever since it came out. And I’ll definitely give The Hunger Games a go! I have the books now so it’ll push me to read them πŸ™‚ And everyone seems to recommend Gone Girl so that’s a must-see as well I guess.

The hype surrounding Gone Girl is well-deserved! The casting was superb and it was faithful to the book. If you are not comfortable with psych thrillers though, you might have to stir away from this one for a while because it’s quite disturbing XD

City of Bones, I have to agree that it was not the best movie I’ve seen. I’m more excited to watch Shadowhunters, which is the tv adaptation of the Mortal Instruments. XD I thought The Maze Runner movie had a surprisingly great cast, the actors saved that movie. It wasn’t faithful to the book in a lot of ways, which was good and bad at the same time. However, a lot of my friends who are non-readers liked the film and understood it.

Oh no! I’m terrible with thrillers… but everyone is raving about Gone Girl today… I’ll have to watch from behind my fingers πŸ˜€ I’m definitely not going to waste my time with City of Bones but Shadowhunters has me so excited! The 7 minute sneak peek was pretty promising too, except Clary’s acting is questionable…

I probably won’t ever read The Maze Runner books but I’ll try to enjoy the movies as a separate entity πŸ™‚

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one of my favorite books too and the movie is just amazing. I really loved the cast and it was really well done. It helps that Stephen Chbosky was the director and screenwriter of the movie πŸ˜€

That was one of the reasons why I really wanted to see The Perks of Being a Wallflower. If the author of the book is so involved in the film, then it has to be good! I LOVED the book so I’m sure I’ll love the movie to. I might eventually give Me and Earl and the Dying Girl a go… I just thought the book was so boring!

Out of all the dystopians to skip Maze Runner is the one. The book series was a dud, and while the movie might have been a bit better, I would put it at the bottom of your list of things to do. The If I Stay movie though was really beautiful and did the book justice πŸ™‚

Great list, Jenna! I really enjoyed the Hunger Games movies, I think they were very well adapted – even if I still need to make up my own mind when seeing the last one! I really hope you’ll enjoy the books, and the movies, when you finally see it πŸ˜€
I have to say, you’re not missing out at all not watching the City of Bones movie, I personally found it very average. I’m excited though, to see what they come up with for the TV show, it sounds promising, hopefully it will be MORE than average!
And the Perks, oh, you need to watch this movie!! I think it was a great adaptation, the actors are good and it stays true to the book. I think you should love it! πŸ˜€

Gone girl was (in my opinion) as good movie if you’ve never read the book. But if you have its entirely too long of a movie when you know how it ends. I remember watching the movie and just thinking- Ok is this the end? Oh….well is THIS the end?

On the other hand The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one of my favorite books/movies and it is so well done. I couldn’t be happier.

I probably won’t ever read the Gone Girl book. There doesn’t seem to be much of a point in doing both since it’s a thriller and the thrill will be gone the second time… But I’m glad that you enjoyed the movie and maybe one day I’ll be ready to watch it XD I’m so excited to watch The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Everybody seems to think that it was amazing so I’m sure I’ll love it too!

The Hunger Games is alright, but you have to watch Catching Fire (which is one of my favorite book to movie adaptations)! Also The Maze Runner is another one of my favorites. And Perks of Being a Wallflower was pretty good, but I also recommend a box of tissues while watching. I also have City of Bones and PaperTowns on my Top Ten Tuesday list as well!:D

I hope you like The Perks of Being a Wallflower movie. I loved it. I was so scared to go see it because I have been obsessed with the book for years, but it was wonderful. This might just be because I am a ridiculously emotional person (it’s embarrassing, actually), but I would recommend having tissues at hand while watching.

I adore both the The Perks of Being a Wallflower book and film. I think the casting and the fact that Stephen Chbosky wrote the screenplay as well made the film on of my favourite adaptations.

I agree with you on Divergent. I liked the books but the films were very underwhelming for me. and I’m just not feeling the cast. I’d give the films a pass.

But anyway, I haven’t seen any of these movies either! Except the first two Hunger Games movies, which I was thrilled about.
Lots of people say that Me, Earl and the Dying Girl is a great adaptation and exceed that of the book! Definitely one I also want to check out.

Oh! I didn’t even pick up on the Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac title πŸ˜€ But you’re so right! I’m so bad with keeping up with adaptations. I’m such an introvert that I hate dragging myself to the cinema. I’m probably only going to see the Gone Girl movie and not read the book. It feels a little bit pointless to do both because the thrill will be gone the second time around?

“Anti-dystopia phase.” I like that, haha. I’m kind of like that right now especially since a lot of ya “dystopia” isn’t really dystopia at all… I read THG when I was in middle school though; it’s definitely fun but not something you have to rush so take your time (but kind of pointless for me to suggest this since you could easily finish the entire trilogy in a day, heh). πŸ˜‰ And skipping City of Bones is a good idea. I’ve watched clips of it and the bits I did see weren’t that awesome. Not that I’m too excited for the show (anymore) either though.

Oh? Why aren’t you excited for Shadowhunters? I’m still pretty excited but my expectations are super low. I’m mainly keen to see the cast because I think they did really well with that. And Malec ❀ I wanted to read The Hunger Games before the end of the year but I don't see it happening any time soon. I'm trying to read Divergent (just the first book) but I just can't bring myself to do it XD

The main reason is that I don’t really like the actress they found for Clary. She’s pretty and all but her acting… :/ It may be too soon for me to judge, so I’ll try to think positive! And oh! I really need to read Divergent… I’ve seen the movie though. I actually really enjoyed it as a film, but I’m a little skeptical with the books (too late now though since I own them all but yeah) since some readers hated them like CW at RTP.
