Another Tuesday, which means another Top Ten Tuesday! This is a weekly feature hosted by the team over at The Broke and The Bookish. This week’s topic is top debut authors who have me looking forward to their next release. I have ten 2015 debut authors to share, so let’s get started.
1. Becky Albertalli
Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda is one of my all-time favourite contemporaries! It’s a light and adorable read, with a really important message. It’s an absolutely fantastic LGBTQ+ book that I think all young readers would enjoy!
2. Nicola Yoon
There was so much hype surrounding this YA debut and I loved it just as much as everybody else seemed to. It was creative and had lots of wonderful illustrations in it. Hopefully Nicola’s next book is just as wonderful as Everything Everything!
3. Adam Silvera
More Happy Than Not was a book that gave me all the feels. I cried like a baby when the book was over and immediately wanted to read something else by Adam Silvera. Sadly, he only had one book available. I’m super excited to see what his next book is about!
4. Renee Ahdieh
The Wrath and the Dawn was probably my favourite fantasy debut that I read this year (not that I read very many to begin with). I thought it was such a great beginning to the duology. It had a fantastic set of characters and the romance was OMG. I devoured this book in just one day.
5. David Arnold
I really liked David Arnold’s debut novel, Mosquitoland, but was frustrated with the writing style. It was overly purple prose-y and I wished it was slightly more comfortable to read. I enjoyed the story a lot so I’m still excited to pick up something else by him.
6. Jasmine Warga
I read My Heart and Other Black Holes at the beginning of the year and I loved it. I read a whole pile of books on depression and mental illness at around the same time and this debut novel really stood out as one of the best.
7. Erin Gough
The Flywheel is an Aussie YA debut that blew me away! It’s a wonderful LGBTQ+ novel and it’s one of my favourite diverse books. This book is set in Sydney and it was wonderful to be able to read a book and know where the places are. This is probably my favourite OzYA book so I highly recommend it, if you can get your hands on it.
8. Meg Haston
I really enjoyed Paperweight by Meg Haston. It was an emotional book about eating disorders and is set in a treatment facility. I thought it was a wonderful representation of eating disorders and it’s a really important book that needs to be read! I can’t wait to see what Meg Haston brings next.
9. Lauren James
The Next Together was a book that I read recently and really enjoyed. It was unique in its concept and was executed pretty well. It’s the first book in a duology so I can’t wait to see what the next book is about.
10. Melinda Salisbury
I read The Sin Eater’s Daughter at the beginning of the year and thought it was a pretty good first book in a new fantasy trilogy. I had some problems with it but loved the direction that it took at the end. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
My honourable mention goes to Sophie Kinsella’s Finding Audrey. I know that she’s not a debut author since she’s released a million adult books, but Finding Audrey is her first YA novel and I thought it was delightful! I hope she continues to write YA books because I’d pick them up in a heartbeat.
So many people are sharing books by authors I’ve never read before. I should check them out.

I can’t wait to read the new Sin Eater’s Daughter novel too, the first one showed a lot of promise.

I had some problems with the first one (also didn’t like Lief very much) but the ending of The Sin Eater’s Daughter was so intriguing and I love the choice she made. I’m interested to see what’s next.

Eep The Wrath and the Dawn was so good!!! The romance in it is amazing and I really love the characters! I’m sad that it’s only going to be a duology because I could spend ages with those characters!

I am 100% going to read everything Adam Silvera puts out now, probably with a box of tissues nearby because OMG.
AND once more, you mention Simon VS. AND ONCE MORE I MUST TELL YOU HOW I STILL HAVE NOT READ THIS. I am an abject failure. I will do it before Christmas, I promise! XD
Also yesss to Nicola Yoon, I love the writing style in Everything, Everything and absolutely cannot wait for more.

I sent out your package today and afterwards I realised that I should’ve included a packet of Oreos as a motivator XD SIMON VS IS SOOOO GOOD. THE ROMANCE. THE CHARACTERS. THE EVERYTHING. ❤

You should try it out. I think it’s a little bit underhyped. There are some flaws but it was still an enjoyable read. And the ending of this first book is great in terms of the choices that the main character makes.

The story was definitely great. I just had some issues with how flowery and complex the writing was. But it’s still a pretty good road trip story.

Good to know, thanks. I’ve added to my list once I saw it at my library. There are some debute books I would be willing to read and this does sound worth adding now. Thanks.

Nicola Yoon YES! I couldn’t htink of anyone else for my post this week so I took liberties with the topic hehehe Happy reading https://ireadboooks.wordpress.com/2015/11/03/top-ten-non-fiction-books-i-want-to-read/

That’s a great topic though! I love non-fiction but I don’t have the willpower to let go of my fictional books 😀

Great list! We have lots of similar books! 🙂
I couldn’t get my mind around Mosquitoland. I didn’t hate it, but I wasn’t blown away by it.
I really want to read Paperweight! I need to get my hands on a copy.

I wasn’t blown away by Mosquitoland either. There were some really really good parts but I found it a little bit hard to get past the flowery writing. It was trying too hard to be sophisticated and deep. Paperweight is a really great book! It wasn’t AMAZING but it had a really strong message and it was based on personal experiences that the author had, while dealing with an eating disorder!

Adam Silvera is a popular one for this topic. I’m sad to say I’ve still not read More Happy Than Not but I’m hoping to get my hands on it soon. I’m currently reading Everything, Everything and very much enjoying it at the moment.

Awesome! I loved Everything Everything. It was almost a 5 star read for me but it had a few minor issues that I couldn’t get over. More Happy Than Not was 4.5 stars too. I had a hard time getting through the first 100 pages, but after that it was a rollercoaster. I cried so hard after reading that book. It really kills your heart!

Okay, so I really need to read The Wrath and the Dawn because… I’m going to Yallfest this year! And Renee Andieh will be there. The author lineup and panels this year is going to be awesome. I may hit the bookstore tomorrow and buy all the books I want to read before I go. Maybe my books-to-prepare-for-Yallfest marathon will get me out of my reading slump by default? 🙂 (Oh and Griffin Teen asked me if I wanted a copy of My True Love Gave to Me so I’ll (kind of) be reading Stephanie Perkins soon enough!)

OMG I AM SO JEALOUS! You’re so lucky to have all of these super cool book events. We don’t have anything like Yallfest 😦 But Yallfest is close to where you live right? I guess it’s good that there won’t be much travelling to do. The Wrath and the Dawn is really, really good! I think you’ll like it. The romance is like… mhmm 😉 I loved My True Love Gave to Me. It’s probably the best YA short story collection that I’ve come across. It’s an awesome read during the Christmas season!

Yup! Yallfest is in my state and it’s only two hours away from where I live. Charleston is such a nice, historic area with beaches, too. I can’t wait. 🙂 Ooh, that makes me even more excited. I love the Christmas/holiday season and adore cozy stories. Have you read Let It Snow? It’s another holiday anthology! I read it 5+ years ago, I think, but it was pretty fun!

Oh yeah I was going to get Let It Snow a couple months ago but thought I’d wait until Christmas… not that it’s even the right season here… It’ll be super hot!

Haha, it’s mind blowing how the other side of the world perceives seasons/holidays differently weather-wise. XD But you should totally read Let It Snow. I think you’d like it!

A lot of new authors I need to be reading!
I think Wrath Of The Dawn is on my mind’s top 5 list of books I HAVE to read before the year is out- or at least get a copy.

You definitely need to read The Wrath and the Dawn soon! Or at least before The Rose and the Dagger comes out! You’ll want to be part of the excitement!! 😀

This is a really fantastic list Jenna, there are so many authors here whose books that I have loved, especially Simon Versus the Homosapiens and Finding Audrey. I need to read some of these before the end of the year, especially The Wrath and the Dawn!

Mosquitoland was a great road trippy kind of book. It wasn’t the best one I’ve ever read but I still enjoyed it enough to give up 3.5 stars. And the story stayed with me enough that I’m super keen to pick up another book by David Arnold.

I just finished Everything Everything. I am so excited to see what Nicola Yoon does next. It was such a beautifully put together book. It must be great when you can get your husband to do the illustrations. So useful.

The illustrations were so good! I LOVE the cover art as well but that’s done by a different person. It was just a beautiful book inside and out!
