Inside Out is my favourite movie of 2015 so far and even though the hype has kind of died down, I’m still not over how good it was yet. Today I’m going to do the Inside Out Book Tag, which Joey @ Thoughts and Afterthoughts tagged me to do ages ago. The tag is simple – name a book that corresponds with the five characters in Inside out! Interpret it however you want.
So I think Joy is supposed to come first because she’s kinda the main character in the movie, but I like Sadness the most so she comes first!
There are many books that make me sad and there are also many books that make me cry but only a few books have made me ugly-cry for hours. I think the one that made me the saddest and cry the most was A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. My heart received such a bashing that I’m still not sure that it’s completely healed.
This is the answer I give in pretty much every tag, but I just love this book so much! Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli puts a smile on my face every time I think about it. It’s cute. It’s adorable. It’s got Oreos. There’s really nothing that could make me happier.
99 Days by Katie Cotugno made me really angry. I felt like there was so much potential in the idea behind the book but it was so poorly executed. The main character, Molly, was driven out of town by bullies when it’s revealed (through a novel that her own mother wrote!) that she cheated on her boyfriend with his brother. The book begins when Molly comes back for the summer. So you’d think that this book would be a coming-of-age or redemption story… NOPE. She just makes one bad decision after another and repeats her mistakes over and over again. There’s zero character development and she doesn’t learn anything in the end.
A book that brought me fear or scared me was The Strange Library by Haruki Murakami. I read this at the beginning of the year so the details are a little bit fuzzy. The main character is a boy who visits a weird library. A strange man leads him to a room deep under the library and he’s trapped there for days and days. There are other creepy things that happen but I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend this book. It’s really, really short – I read it in about 30 minutes – and it’s got some cool formatting and illustrations.
I’m going to interpret this as a book that I hated and felt like I wasted my time and money on. For me, this book is Love Hurts by Malorie Blackman. This is a collection of short stories by 20+ YA authors about the different sides of love… at least that’s how it was marketed. This caught my attention because a lot of my favourite authors contributed to this anthology (e.g. Gayle Forman, Markus Zusak). And I had a really good experience with the short story collection that Stephanie Perkins’ edited, so I thought this would be just as good.
It turned out that only 7 of the 24 ‘short stories’ in Love Hurts were original short stories. The rest were excerpts taken from already published books. I felt completely cheated and angry that I wasted $20 on a book that I had pretty much already read half of. I thought it was a really poorly curated collection too. A lot of the excerpts made no sense because we only got a couple pages and there was just no context.
This book just made me so angry and disgusted that I didn’t even care when I accidentally dropped it and left a huge crease on the cover. The front cover literally folded in half and I DIDN’T CARE.
I TAG: everyone!
I have no idea who has or hasn’t done this tag because I was kind of late to the Inside Out bandwagon… and this tag was popular such a long time ago that I’m probably the only one who hasn’t done it. So, link me yours if you’ve already done this tag!
It shames me to say that I STILL haven’t had the pleasure of seeing Inside Out. I’ve heard such great things, and I’m a sucker for animated movies. -.- I really need to get on it. Along the same lines, I need to get my hands on Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda. Lovely post! x

YOU MUST WATCH IT.

You’re missing out!! Inside Out is amazing! It’s up there with Big Hero 6, for me. After I saw it, I wanted to watch it again straight away! You can watch it and then do this tag 🙂

I KNOW RIGHT?! For most of the movie I was like… Joy you suck. You know nothing. Take me back to Sadness!

You’re not the only person I’ve heard 99 Days made angry. They said the same thing you did.

I think most people share the same opinion. It was just terrible. I kept waiting for it to get better or for some character development to actually happen but NOTHING. It was so incredibly frustrating to read. And there was so much cheating in the book.

I think I’ll skip it then. 😉

Completely forgot Murakami had another one translated. Thanks for the remind!

He has another new one out now: Pinball/Wind. No idea if that’s a new translation or a reprint but the cover design is amazing!

Actually, that is the one I was thinking about. It’s not new. It’s his first book, but it is only now being translated. Nonetheless, thanks for reminding me.

I literally just watched Inside Out two days ago and absolutely loved it, so I’m reaaaally excited to see this tag pop up on my Reader. I haven’t read any of the books you’ve listed or even heard of them (except for Haruki Murakami, who is one of my great big loves), but that’s just as great because now I’m discovering new books to read, yay! I might do this tag too because… well, Inside Out. ❤

*tags you*
Yay I’m so glad you loved Inside Out! (Though I don’t really know anyone who didn’t like it.) The Strange Library is probably the easiest Murakami to read and it’s amazing! But really creepy. Definitely check out Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda and A Little Life. The other two aren’t worth the time.

Haha, I love Murakami for his weirdness–he’s definitely not for everyone, though, and I know some people who just don’t like his writing. Have you read any of his other works? 🙂
And oh yay, book recs! I’m going to look them up and add them to my list. ❤

I have read Norwegian Wood and After Dark. I read half of Wind Up Bird Chronicles but it was a massive book and I never ended up finishing it T_T Hopefully I can revisit it someday. I also have Kafka on the Shore and Pinball/Wind on my shelf.

I’ve read Norwegian Wood too! It’s actually my first Murakami book and I think that one was also a beginners’ Murakami. Did you like that or After Dark better? :p
I saw Pinball/Wind on the bookshelves some weeks ago and absolutely loved the binding! I might get it just for that–reading 1Q84 took me so long that I’m in the mood for something more ‘grounded’ than what Murakami usually offers, but I generally really love him. 🙂

I honestly can’t compare them because I read After Dark a few months ago and I read Norwegian Wood about 6 years ago. They’re both really great and After Dark is pretty short and easy to read.

An Inside Out Book Tag? Finally! I love Inside Out (I think I’ve abused the replay button with how much I’ve clicked on it, I just love this so much!) and doing this book tag would be my ultimate dream (well, not really).
I’m itching to read Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda, but I couldn’t find a copy. Our local bookstores (we only have two) aren’t carrying them anymore.

Consider yourself tagged! It’s such a fun and easy tag! I loved making my own Inside Out graphics too, and revisiting the movie through looking at all the Google images 😀
Oh no! I hope Simon comes to you soon one day. It’s so worth the read if you can order it online or something.

I’m tagged! Yay! *dances around in glee* Thank you! I’m excited to make my own graphics, too!
I’m still waiting for the book to be available here. Either that or I’ll just wait until I’m in the city to visit the bookstores there.
I have a bad experience with buying books online (my first, too). I’m hesitant to try it soon, despite how mouth-watering Book Depository’s selections are.

Oh no! I use Book Depository and I find that they’re pretty reliable. I’ve probably ordered 100+ books from them and none of them have ever gotten lost. I did have one that was pretty badly damaged but their customer service was great and they just sent me a new one straight away.
Excited to see your Inside Out Tag!

Maybe I’ll try Book Depository next year. I’m still hesitant, but it’s gradually fading.
I am, too! Though, I’m having a hard time with the graphics. Why is it so hard? I’m no graphic artist.

Dw neither am I. I don’t have the creativity to make beautiful graphics T_T But since it’s Inside Out, it’ll be cute no matter what!

I loved Inside Out- I watched it as soon as it came out!
I really need to read A Little Life, I’ve been hearing many good things about it.

A Little Life is AMAZING! It’s a really big book so it took me forever to finish but I’m so glad I read it. It was almost life-changing (I have yet to discover what has changed but something has!)

Hahahaha, I’m a big fan of big books anyway, so hopefully the book won’t be too intimidating.

I absolutely adore Inside Out so obviously I adore this tag haha. I’ve heard a lot of wonderful things about Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda so I’m definitely going to have to bump it up on my to be read list. 🙂

Yes you really must! It’s a really quick read as well so you should definitely give it a go soon 🙂

How cute is this tag!!! EEK!! I still need to watch this movie. I kept putting it off and then it left theaters lol!! Love your answers!! I hate to hear that about 99 days. I want to read it so bad.

I almost missed Inside Out as well! I left it until really, really late and the week after I watched it, it wasn’t showing anymore.
If you’re interested in 99 Days, you should definitely give it a go. But I wouldn’t recommend buying your own copy. You might regret it 🙂

This seems like such a fun tag! I bawled my eyes out when I watched Inside Out. Definitely one of my favorite movies of the year for sure. I haven’t read 99 Days by Katie Cotugno but based on her other book, How to Love, I’m not surprised that this book made you angry. How to Love had very despicable characters, which is sad because the book had so much potential.

I wanted to pick up How to Love just to see if it was better, but I’ve been super hesitant based on my experience with 99 Days. Looks like I won’t be reading it. I thought the premise of 99 Days had a lot of potential too but the characters turned out to be really despicable (like you said). There were some characters that I thought I’d like, but they ended up being real dirtbags too!
